Three tattoo-friendly Ryokan to elevate your Kanazawa trip.

Kanazawa is a popular tourist destination in Japan for a number of reasons: aside of it’s incredible beauty –it’s called Little Kyoto after all– it offers a different side of Japan easily accessible as weekend trip!

If staying in a ryokan and relaxing in an onsen after discovering Kanazawa sounds like something you’d like to do, you’re in for a treat! I bring you three Japanese Ryokan with healing thermal waters: Matsusaki, Ryoutei Manyou and Tagawa Ryusenkaku.

These three traditional hotels draw their healing waters directly from the source, a Hot Spring said to be at least 1400 years old. The water properties include fatigue-healing and skin-smoothing/beautifying. You can soak as long as you want- your skin never feels dry! I can vouch for that.

Known back in the day as Tatsunokuchi, the area of Nomi is conveniently close to Kanazawa station, roughly 30 minutes away. These three Ryokan in Nomi are basically the closest onsen to Kanazawa!

Got tattoos?? Don’t worry. These three Ryokan are tattoo friendly to a certain degree. Please read the info about each to make your best decision.

As you may already know, tattoos are kind of taboo in Japan, meaning that many hot spring public baths ban tattooed guests (More info on that here and here). The more reason to take full advantage of these three options!

These three Ryokan in Nomi are basically the closest onsen to Kanazawa.

Matsusaki

Stepping into Matsusaki is like crossing a portal to older days. Walk through the hotel’s private lake and garden and kickstart your relaxation journey!

This huge ryokan has centuries of history but has been taken good care of, so you won’t really miss any comforts while you stay. From their own tea house to a noodle restaurant and various bars, it has literally everything!

There are lots of room options at Matsusaki, for all budgets. However, take my advice if you can and book a room with private onsen and rotenburo (open air onsen). These rooms are huge and incredibly warm and comfy, perfect for couples, families and small groups!

In my opinion, nothing beats having access to your own onsen or rotenburo at any time (public ones are often subject to scheduling!).

If you’re staying at a ryokan, missing the local cuisine would mean missing a third of the experience. Ryokan stays often offer meal plans or have dinner and breakfast included in the room price. In the case of Matsusaki these extensive meals are served in your own room, made with care by expert cooks.

Nomi has amazing local food and access to ingredients from neighboring prefectures so the Ryokan here offer a scrumptious menu including fresh seasonal fish and crab, veggies and local beer and sake.

The next morning, a delightful Japanese breakfast will get you energized for your day of sightseeing in Kanazawa. It’s such a spread, I couldn’t finish mine!

There are over six public baths in Matsusaki, so if budget is tight and you would rather rent a more affordable room sans private hot spring, you can always enjoy the many onsen and rotenburo in the hotel. Like this one:

Ryotei Manyou

Ryotei Manyou is very close to Matsusaki (in fact these three ryokan are a few minutes away of each other) but it has its own particularities. Keep reading!

Firstly, some of the Japanese style rooms are basically, apartment-sized! Luxuriously spacious and stylish, some of them fit up to 10 people and even have different western and Japanese bedrooms inside.

If you rent one of these rooms, you get to enjoy your own private garden and onsen. These really make you feel like you’re living in a traditional house in the Japanese countryside! Minus any possible inconvenience, that is.

If you’re in Japan with a small group of friends, family or your partner, splurging in one of these rooms will be the highlight of your trip and will tick the ryokan and onsen experiences off your bucket lists, in style.

Small private onsen bath in room.

The second main difference is that Ryotei Manyo has a non-tattoo policy for its public baths. However, there’s a huge family/private bath you can rent and enjoy, for yourself or whoever you want to share it with. So if you’re tattooed and/or shy, like myself (I’m both), you can still enjoy soaking in the medicinal waters.

One of the biggest family onsen I’ve seen.

Two fun facts about Ryotei Manyo: Izumi Kyoka,  a famous Japanese writer from Meiji era used to love this ryokan and came here to write! Also, you can find a Buddha statue brought all the way from Indonesia in the premises. Check it out!

Tagawa Ryusenkaku

I could only visit Tagawa Ryusenkaku’s public outdoor bath, unfortunately, but it was one of the most memorable onsen I’ve seen. You’ll see why soon!

Tagawa Ryusenkaku has a rotenburo on a rice field. Yes, you read that right! The hot spring water comes from below a rice field, and around the various baths (and depending on the season), there’s actual rice growing! That’s why they proudly call this onsen “Rice Field Hot Spring Water”.

Even with over 6 public baths in the hotel and rooms with private onsen to choose from, Tagawa Ryusenkaku’s rice field rotenburo still reigns king, for another unique reason: It’s mixed!

That means that women, men and children can enjoy this hot spring at the same time! In exchange, guests are not completely naked but are given a special kind of garment to wear while bathing.

Guests with smaller tattoos are welcome to soak in the healing public onsen waters. Bigger back pieces, sleeves and suit tattoos are unfortunately banned at the public baths in Tagawa Ryusenkaku.

Mixed onsen are rare in Japan so this could the perfect chance for you to enjoy one. It’s open until late so don’t hesitate to discover how the experience changes throughout the day.
