My Photography + Video Gear: What I use to Insta, Blog & Vlog.

This was very much requested and I finally got myself to do it! Here’s my main photo and video gear, that I use for all my content out there. Hope it helps you in some way!

There are a few things to go through so let’s get right into it!

This post is not sponsored in any way and there are no affiliate links because I haven’t partnered with any of the brands here although, honestly, I’d love to. #keepingitreal.

1. APS-C Cameras and lenses.

Sony A6000. A6500 looks pretty similar. Taken with Sony A6500 + SIGMA 30 mm f/1.4 DC DN

I’m a big fan of the Sony Alpha range and I’ve had nearly all the models! My current two are the Sony A6000 and Sony A6500. Both are really good cameras. Decently priced, with tons of lenses to choose from that range from affordable to splurge material. These are APS-C cameras, meaning the sensor is cropped. This affects the quality of the photo in some degree, but in my experience, most people (even Insta-addicts) don’t really need a bulky, expensive full frame camera. You can take killer shots with a good APS-C camera with a dedicated lens. There are amazing lenses for APS-C cameras so you can actually invest money in a new APS-C body plus a couple good lenses instead of blowing all your budget on a full frame camera.

When I upgraded from the 6000 to the 6500, I kept the older one for the times I don’t want to be changing the lenses! I can’t be the only one, hahaha. The bodies look almost the same and weight almost the same too. I used my 6500 with a SIGMA 30 mm f/1.4 DC DN lens for all the photos in this post, except the ones that actually have the 6500 on them, which I took with Iphone X.

L-R: Sony Macro, Sony Tele, Samyang Fisheye, Sigma 16mm. Taken with Sony A6500 + SIGMA 30 mm f/1.4 DC DN

The complete list of the 6 lenses I have for the Sony Alphas:

  • SIGMA 30 mm f/1.4 DC DN
  • SIGMA 16mm f/1.4 DC DN
  • SONY FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS

These are my main lenses. Love both the SIGMA and they are really affordable!!I use the 16 mm for street photography and the 30 mm for portraits/everyday photography. The SONY is a zoom lens that is great for events in which you need to get closer to the subject while battling hordes of people.

  • SONY E 30mm f/3.5 Macro Lens
  • Sony E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 Telephoto Lens
  • Samyang 8mm T3.8 VDSLR Fisheye

These are very specific lenses that I hardly ever reach for, but I still keep around for fun! Hope to use the tele lens when I go photograph ezo momongas in the future. sigh someday.

Sony A6000 with Nissin i40 flash on.

As accessories for the Alphas, I have the Nissin i40 flash which is probably the only flash that doesn’t look obnoxious on the small bodies of the APC-S Sony cameras. It’s a great flash and works like a charm.

I recently bought a RODE VideoMicro microphone that also doesn’t look too bad on, and works really good for the price too. I now do my vlog voice overs with it and I’m very happy with it. (See -and hear- my latest vlog here)

2. Full Frame camera:

I also have a full frame camera for those times I want the je ne sais quoi of a full-frame shot. Proven that you know how to handle the Nikon D610 you will definitely enjoy the superior details, dynamic range, color accuracy and sensitivity. This camera is old and that definitely has pros and cons. Pros: better price! ENDLESS battery! Cons: she does not make anything easier. No Built-in Image Stabilization, no live view preview, and video quality pales in comparison with any newer model.

Do I love it? Yes. It definitely takes a little longer to get the shot but hey, sometimes you have to take your time.

I skipped the “kit lens” with the Nikon D610 and instead I invested in this Tamron SP 35 mm f/1.8 Di VC which is absolutely gorgeous. 35 mm is an overall great lens for almost any kind of shot and with an aperture of 1.8 you can get amazing results. This is my only FF lens at the moment but I truly enjoy it.

3. Compact Camera.

When the iPhone is not enough but I don’t want to carry a heavy camera, I have the Canon G7 MII. This little camera is small and light, but it delivers! I love taking this camera out and about -and I do almost every time I leave the house! With an aperture of 1.8 and zoom, it’s really versatile. Bonus points for the rotating screen! The only flaws are that you can’t charge it and use it at the same time, and the microphone: audio quality is quite bad and it doesn’t allow an external microphone.

4. Gimbal

Before having the Osmo Pocket I got the Osmo Mobile. Unfortunately, I hardly ever reach for it. It’s kind of heavy and bulky. The Osmo Pocket, on the other hand, is the lightest, tiniest gimbal and I LOVE IT. It’s absolutely fun to bring around and the video quality, for a camera so small, is great. In fact my two latest vlogs were filmed with it (Persona 5 Real life locations and Tokyo New Year).

Being able to use with or without a phone is a plus for me since I’m always running out of battery on my phone. It can film 4k video and the microphone is decent too! There are a couple downsides though, I’m missing a zoom and maybe and option to plug in another microphone, but maybe they will introduce some of these features on following firmware updates. DJI PLS LISTEN TO US AND GIVE US ZOOM Starts a petition in change.org.

5.Phone photography.

Many of the clips and photos you see on my Instagram Stories are taken with my trusty iPhone X so I thought I should mention it here too. It has a bunny. Duh.

And this is how I store them. I recently Konmari-ed the heck out of my camera drawer so it looks nice and tidy… for a couple weeks probably.  Not mentioned in the article are the Instax camera with which I do my polaroid giveaways (yay) and the DJI Spark Drone which I can hardly ever fly because even in flight safe areas a nice policeman will come and tell me to please stop that nonsense (true story). It’s really difficult to fly that poor drone.

Anyhow! That’s all for the moment. Thank you so much for reading and hope this was helpful in some way!
